ER: Indian Style

Chad and I have been living in India for close to five years now. It can be expected that over that amount of time we've had our fair share of trips to the hospital for this and that. Personally, I think I've had more than my fair share of doctor visits in India, but that's a different story for a different day.

In this version of our continued saga living in Mother India, Ezra made his first trip to the hospital for anything other than a routine check-up. Let me just say, it was as positive an experience as we could have hoped for, and I'd like to thank the doctors who took care of us yesterday evening.

Here is the play-by-play:

After our family walk, Ezra and Cedric were playing in the nursery while Chad and I started to get dinner ready. After about a minute or two of play, we heard Ezra crying. When we went in and checked on him, we found him with a bloody lower lip. He was sitting right next to the door, which both he and Cedric love to play with. I can only assume that he got a little to close to the corner of the door. The cut doesn't look too bad in the picture, but it was pretty deep.

We called our resident PA who lives a few doors down from us, and she recommended taking him to the hospital. Our employer has a contract with Max Super Specialty Hospital, and our school doctor arranged for a physician to meet us there. We also called our dear friend Mary, who was in the middle of a massage, but stopped everything when she heard her phone ring twice and hurried over to the apartment. Mary agreed to come along with Ez and me while Chad stayed home with brother Cedric.

Driving to the hospital, which is about 8 miles away, takes forever in Delhi traffic. On the way there, the doctor from Max called to check on us and see how Ez was doing. We told him we'd be there in 30 minutes. In reality, it took more like an hour. At the hospital, the emergency room was crowded, but impressively organized and clean. The doctor looked at Ezra (who was in his usually cheery mood), and determined that the plastic surgeon needed to be called.

We waited for about 45 minutes for the plastics doctor, and when he arrived he gave us two options: general anesthetic or local anesthetic. We opted for local. In the end, though, it was determined that due to the location of the cut and the size of Ezra, that no aesthetic would be used at all. Oh my!  This daddy's blood pressure went up a few notches. We held Ez down while the doctor quickly worked at putting in four stitches. Ez screamed louder than I ever cared to hear any child--let alone my own--scream. But, the pain was quickly over, and Ezra recovered his usual mood after a few minutes. By this time, it was about two hours past Ezra's bedtime. We got the bill taken care of, stopped off in the chemist to get some medicine, and headed for home and Ezra nodded off for dreamland.

A few takeaways from our experience for any traveler to New Delhi, or any IPs coming for surrogacy.
1. Max hospital is definitely a number you need to have on hand. They're a good western-style facility.
2. Indian hospitals, including Max, are quite crowded and the idea of personal space is not the same as it is in the West.  (Our only experience in a non-crowded Indian hospital was at BLK hospital, where the boys were born, which seemed to have plenty of room for everyone... does the exception prove the rule?)
3. You have to pay at the time of the procedure. Have your credit card or cash on hand. FYI: four stitches cost about $175.
4. (apologies ahead of time for the generalization) Indian doctors typically have really poor bedside manner.

That's all for now.

Peace,
Douglas

Happening Now

Ezra and Douglas are on their way to the hospital to get stitches on Ezra's bottom lip. Mark your calendar for tonight as our first trip to the emergency room!

A huge thanks to Auntie Mary for co-piloting the mission across Delhi to Max Super Specialty Hospital.

Update with pictures tomorrow!

There Is A Song

It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It is a powerful song. It comes from deep down inside. It sounds beautiful. It is one of my favorites. It is really out of context, but it triggers a memory of mine from ten months ago. It reminds me of my nightly cab rides to visit Ezra in the hospital when I had my iPod cranked just loud enough to drown out the sounds of Delhi traffic, just loud enough to forget the sea of people that surrounded the car at the stop lights, just loud enough to forget the smells of burning India during the cold months, and just loud enough to get me into the NICU with a smile on my face.

There have been four days that the twins have not been in the same place. Those have been the hardest four days of parenting twins.

Today is Doug's birthday! Happy 30th to my wonderful husband. Due to my lack of culinary skills and my inability/unwillingness to make quality things without a box, Doug actually made his own birthday cake. He takes full responsibility for this since I volunteered to make the cake first, but he didn't want a box cake.

I am finally feeling well enough to get out of bed. I have been crazy sick and on strict Douglas instituted quarantine since Wednesday morning. It all started with chest pains, then it turned into fever then no fever and aches, then fever again, and repeat. There was one day I slept almost twenty hours. The final day was full scale strep throat which quickly went away after I overdosed on antibiotics. I misunderstood that doctor's orders of "take three times". She meant take once each day for three days. I understood take three times each day. Needless to say the strep is gone, but so is all my good bacteria.

We are off to Hong Kong on Friday to officially celebrate Doug's birthday. We decided that since we had a four day weekend the week after his birthday we would delay the party and travel to a new country. We are both really excited... oh and I am sure the boys are excited too!

Here is that song: Adele - I Found A Boy

Twin Update

The boys are almost eight months old, and we went to the doctor in America for the first time. Everything is going great, and the boys are growing bigger and bigger. Here are some highlights:

Ezra has two teeth and is starting to crawl. Others who meet him often remark how athletic he is. He has very muscular legs and loves to move about. He smiles often. He's no longer stoically silent twin, as he has found his voice in the last couple of weeks; although he's still not quite as talkative as his brother. He is eating two "real food" (read baby food puree) meals per day and loves all of the food we've tried except for sweet potatoes. He is still our petit homme but has added on almost two pounds since we left India and now weighs 13 lbs, 6 oz and he is 25.7 inches long. Despite the severe weight discrepancy between Ez and his brother, the doctor is not concerned as he is growing at a normal rate. He's had some eczema patches on his skin since the beginning of June (which will be the subject of another post), but those have been kept under control with lotions and emollients. He loves to go hunting for his brother's pacifier and use it as a teething toy.

Cedric loves to roll on the floor and uses his hands to turn in a complete circle while on his belly with remarkable agility and quickness. None of his teeth have broken through, but he has two that are waiting just below the surface of his gums. In the last week, he has become an expert at sitting up on the floor unassisted and is becoming very proficient at holding his own bottle and feeding himself. He loves to swim and go under the water. He is still our big boy and weighs 16 lbs 15 oz.He is 27.5 inches long. He follows conversations that are going on in the room and really loves being around people. He has a severe addiction to his pacifier when tired and falling asleep (way to go, Dads!). He loves to eat and gets very excited when he sees his food. He's loved everything that he's tried except for peas.

All in all, a great trip to the doctor!

Ultrasound Brief

I just got back from Seema's ultrasound appointment. She was looking great, but she is tired and ready for those babies to be evicted. The babies are getting big and looking great. Twin A was doing barrel rolls trying to get away from the photo session. Twin B was jumping around trying to get away from Twin A. Seema is at the gynecologist appointment right now... I decided I should not sit in on that one. Once we get that report we will have an idea of when those babies are coming.

Here are a few stats until we get the official report.

Twin A:
Weight: 5 lbs 11 oz
Heart Rate: 153 bpm
Position: Head up

Twin B:
Weight: 4 lbs 11 oz
Heart Rate: 135 bpm
Position: Head down

Ready or not... Babies, Babies, Babies!

The Weekend and a 24 Week Update

Today I worked the ground in my garden plot and planted several seeds in pots on our terrace. Once those get going I will move them down into their official home in the community garden. If I plant them directly in the plot now, chances are the monsoon rains would wash them away. This is my first garden so with a little luck we should have lettuce, spinach, spring onions, radishes, carrots, eggplant, and peppers very soon.

We had a good meeting with our doctor yesterday. Our surromama is doing great. She is having normal everything, weight gain is good, and is not experiencing any discomfort other than concern of how her body will look after the twins are born. She sounds all together happy which in turn makes us very happy. The doctor will not let her go beyond 38 weeks, and advised against traveling too far from Delhi after Diwali.

The carpet shopping continues as we now have a 50-year old carpet that was acquired from the tribal mountains near the Iran - Afghanistan border. Thankfully we didn't have to trek there to get it. According to the carpet man it was used as a window/door cover for someone's home. When guests came they would take it down, sit on it, and drink tea. Which is really cool if all that is true. We are planning to look at a few more pieces tomorrow before we seal the deal.

Our weekend is ending with chocolate chip cookies... I can't think of a better way!
